ENERGY STAR–not just for appliances

The ENERGY STAR® program sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) is familiar to most people through the ENERGY STAR stickers on energy-using devices like home appliances.   Since 1999, ENERGY STAR has also provided a way to benchmark commercial building energy performance.

The human interface to ENERGY STAR’s building energy information system, Portfolio Manager,  gives owners and managers detailed data about energy use and costs, taking weather and climate differences across the country into account.

As of March 2011, ENERGY STAR also provides a  1 to 100 scoring system that makes it easy to compare energy performance for 15 types of facilities (assisted living facilities, banks, courthouses, data centers, dormitories, hospitals, hotels, houses of workshop, K-12 schools, medical offices, office buildings, retail stores, supermarkets, warehouses, and wastewater treatment plants).

Energy Stewards™ is a friendly front-end to ENERGY STAR.  Energy Stewards exchanges data with  ENERGY STAR’s system  every night, displaying ENERGY STAR’s calculations for annual energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and ENERGY STAR ratings in our easy-to-understand graphs and tables.

As the developer of Energy Stewards, Rapid Improvement Associates is an ENERGY STAR Partner.   We’re glad to be able to leverage the investment of U.S. taxpayer funds that makes the ENERGY STAR system available to the public.
